In an effort to draw inspiration from the 1995–96 season, Liverpool has gone vintage with their away uniform for the upcoming season.
The Reds used a striking white and green away uniform during the time they were known as “The Spice Boys,” and it will return in August when the new season begins. Both young and old stars can be seen donning the look in a video shared on the club’s Twitter account.
Additionally prominently featured are manager Jurgen Klopp, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Harvey Elliott. The kit has a black collar and cuff with a green and white quarter pattern. Black shorts, a black name and number, and white socks with a black and green accent complete the look. A jacket in a related style was also made available by the club.
The video includes Anfield legend Robbie Fowler, who scored 36 goals across all competitions while donning the uniform 27 years ago. “I have fond memories of the 1995-96 season because of the iconic white and green away strip and for scoring my most goals in one season,” he said on the club’s website. “I adore the new, contemporary spin on the white and green away kit.”
Liverpool donned the uniform against Manchester United in the 1996 FA Cup final at the original Wembley. They narrowly lost the game, but the white outfits the players wore before the game are still recognizable. Eric Cantona scored the game-winning goal.
On the first weekend of the season, Klopp’s team travels to Chelsea, and their second away game of the year is at Newcastle. The first time we might see it could be several weeks into the season because neither club is likely to force Liverpool out of their customary red uniform.
The uniform will make its debut against Championship team Leicester at Singapore’s National Stadium on July 30 for supporters who are traveling with the club on its preseason tour of Asia.
With Alexis Mac Allister already moving to Anfield, a number of new arrivals might already be donning the uniform by then. The former Brighton player, who departed the Amex after several standout seasons, will strengthen Liverpool’s midfield as they attempt to bounce back from a disappointing year.
