Levi Colwill, a defender for Chelsea, is someone Liverpool would be willing to pay a lot of money to acquire this summer.
Colwill has been closely associated with the Reds as his future at Stamford Bridge is uncertain. The 20-year-old appears to be sticking put for the time being, though, with Chelsea allegedly insistent that he won’t be traded.
However, journalist David Lynch highlighted Liverpool’s interest in Colwill while speaking to Redmen TV yesterday. Lynch claims that the Reds will relocate if Chelsea even hints at encouraging them.
They would “absolutely love to” sign Colwill, I believe. “I believe Liverpool would pull this off if there was even a remote chance they could. They adore him, honestly. He is a native son and is ideal in many aspects. I believe he would be the perfect signing for that job.
“It’s a tough one; Brighton have already given up, and it appears that they will instead choose Calvin Bassey since they had doubts about their ability to close a transaction. However, Liverpool has a lot more money than Brighton and will likely able to negotiate a contract at a higher price than Brighton were expecting.
“Maybe that possibility opens up for Liverpool and they can really pursue it if it gets to the point where he says “I’m not going to sign a contract” later this summer because he doesn’t feel there are enough guarantees over his playing time.
“I am aware that there has been communication on the part of the agents, and they are monitoring him. In this case, I believe they would pay a high price for him if they had even the tiniest bit of encouragement that they could work out a deal with Chelsea.
Liverpool is prepared to face Colwill
We’re beginning to get the lay of the land as Liverpool’s summer window begins to take form.
For several months now, it has been said that the Reds are looking for a center defender, preferably a left-footer.
Clearly, the middle has taken precedence thus far. But with that almost finished, focus will now shift to whether Liverpool can close a deal to bolster their defensive unit.
Colwill is obviously someone to watch in light of this. The academy graduate is being courted by Chelsea, but Liverpool isn’t exactly known for hanging around in a race they know they can’t win. The player’s camp must have offered them some sort of hope.
It seems as though the Reds will strike if the West Londoners even slightly relax their stance, as Lynch suggests. Brighton appears to be out of the running now, and Liverpool would bet on their ability to persuade a player who admires Steven Gerrard.
Other targets in the window may be easier to capture right now. One is Goncalo Inacio, whose contract with Sporting contains a rather modest release clause.
However, Liverpool is wise to wait before firing the shot on someone else if they believe Chelsea would relent on Colwill.
While on loan at Huddersfield Town in 2021/22, the teenage defender was praised as being “fantastic” by teammate Lewis O’Brien [Yorkshire Live]. Colwill has only gotten better since then. The Reds seem to really want him, so it will be fascinating to see how far they are ready to go for him.
