Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai were already acquired by Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp during the transfer market, so could the German now start to consider bolstering his defensive options ahead of the 2023–24 season?
Perr Schuurs, a Dutch defender, is currently on Jurgen Klopp’s list of targets, and it has now been made public how much Torino will demand from Liverpool in order to sign him.
What will Perr Schuurs set Liverpool back?
La Stampa (via TuttoMercatoWeb) reported that the Anfield side will have to pay €40m (£34m) in order for any potential move to be finalized. This could be a fantastic deal for the club.
Tuttosport, an Italian publication, claims that Klopp has been after the defender for more than two years and is eager to complete a deal for the 23-year-old as soon as possible. Torino reportedly rejected a £25 million offer from the German manager.
The Reds must move quickly to bring Schuurs to Merseyside because Napoli, who is seeking to replace Kim Min-jae, who is on his way to Bayern, is still interested in him.
How effective is Perr Schurrs?
The former Ajax starlet had a strong season in Serie A in 2022–2023, leading the Torino squad in tackles (1.7) and clearances (3.2) per game while also winning 4.1 total duels per game with a success rate of 55%, showcasing his effectiveness as the center of the defense.
Liverpool came within 21 goals of beating Manchester City to the Premier League title last season, but this season they gave up 47 goals, a 21-goal increase. This suggests Klopp needs to make some defensive additions.
Joe Gomez, in particular, didn’t exactly have the best of seasons. He finished last season in 11th place overall on Sofascore and seventh place for tackles per game (1.3) among the Liverpool team. It is obvious that they need to replace the Englishman.
With a higher pass completion percentage (88.1% to 85.7%) than Gomez, more aerial duels won (62 to 46), more tackles made (26 to 21), and more blocks made (29 to 17), Schuurs is unquestionably a better defender than the Liverpool player in a number of different metrics.
It’s clear that the Anfield team needs a player of his caliber who can enter and stake a claim for a first-team spot, giving Klopp something different in the heart of the defense. Journalist Josh Bunting even praised him and dubbed him a “mountain.”
Since Virgil Van Dijk recently turned 32, it’s possible that he won’t have much time left at the top of the game. As a result, Schuurs can replace Gomez right away and would make a great successor for the Dutch superstar who has been a key component of their success over the past five years.
