According to rumours, Liverpool may consider midfielder Boubacar Kamara of Aston Villa for a defensive midfield position.
As Fabinho moves closer to finalizing a £40 million transfer to Al Ittihad in Saudi Arabia, Jurgen Klopp is preparing for the loss of the longtime midfield alternative.
The midfielder will leave Anfield after six seasons with the Saudi Pro League champions, where he has won every honor possible. Liverpool is desperate to act quickly and find a replacement for the 29-year-old as a result.
The Reds were already looking for a defensive midfield replacement for the former AS Monaco player. The Athletic reports that France international Kamara is also on the list in addition to Crystal Palace midfielder Cheick Doucoure.
Despite being forced to leave the starting lineup due to knee and ankle problems, Kamara, 23, came back to help Unai Emery’s team earn a spot in the Europa Conference League.
One of those contests was against Liverpool, and their 1-1 tie put a stop to the Reds’ winning streaks of eight games in a row.
Steven Gerrard, a legend at Liverpool, was responsible for bringing Kamara to the Premier League. The France midfielder left Ligue 1 club Marseille last summer to join Al-Ettifaq after turning down offers from Champions League clubs.
“He’s a young player, in terms of age, but he plays with a lot of maturity,” Gerrard said, according to the official Aston Villa website. He has participated in numerous matches in one of the top five leagues.
He is strong, reliable, and just the kind of player we need to go to the next stage. He fits our playing style, and once he settles in, I have no doubt that the Aston Villa supporters will be watching a very top player.
With the exception of a slump in form last season, Liverpool has rarely played without Fabinho in the middle of the field.
The Brazilian was forced to leave the team at the beginning of the year after Stefan Bajcetic’s emergence due to his poor performance during the previous season.
Gerrard has already given Klopp and Jorg Schmadtke a hint about Kamara’s adaptability by suggesting that he be considered.
“He can play as a defensive midfielder,” he continued. In our system, he may also play as a left or right eight. He can play to the right or left and can also play as a centre-back in the middle of a back three.
Although we signed him as a midfielder, he does offer some versatility. As a manager, it’s comforting to know that someone can absorb tactical information.
“We closely observed him at Marseille, where he consistently performed at a high level in a wide range of tasks. As a central midfielder in a two, it was well-reported that he won the game against Nantes when I went to witness it.
He was very good on both the offensive and defensive ends of the field. We were eager to complete the signing. It has only lately occurred because, understandably, he wanted to treat Marseille with the utmost respect. The recent news of his signing is a significant milestone for Aston Villa.
