Since LaLiga ruled against the granting of a professional contract to Barcelona midfielder Gavi, TEAMtalk can provide the most recent information about him.
The brilliant 18-year-old was reportedly in negotiations to join Liverpool and Manchester City prior to signing his now-rejected contract, but he chose to remain at the Camp Nou.
Gavi signed a new lucrative contract early this season, but LaLiga has now disallowed it, so he remains legally bound to his former youth contract, which expires in the summer.
Barca has been paying Gavi as a senior player and could therefore face legal action when they disclose their annual finances, as there is no legal basis for the club to be paying him anything above the academy wage specified in his previous contract.
President of La Liga Javier Tebas has clarified the decision:
“As of November, [Gavi’s] pay cannot be recognized because Barcelona is €200m over their salary cap.” We cannot bypass the control regulations.”
Barcelona is “not pleased” with the Gavi scenario
Now, according to transfer specialist Graeme Bailey, Gavi would love to continue at Barcelona, despite the rᴜmors surrounding his future.
Bailey told TEAMtalk exclusively, “Barcelona are unhappy with the judgements that resulted in Gavi returning to his junior contract and his first-team contract being suspended.
“Barcelona is said to have kept Gavi apprised of every development, and although not like the position, the player has no intention of taking advantage of any option that would allow him to depart for nothing.
“Gavi had the opportunity to move last summer before signing this contract, but he chose not to.
Those around his past suitors, like as Liverpool and Manchester City, do not believe he wants to transfer.
As previously reported by TEAMtalk, both Liverpool and Manchester City are eager to sign Gavi this summer, with Jürgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola being huge fans of the youngster.
Gavi might be forced to leave Barcelona despite his wish to remain with the Catalans if Barca fails to free up sufficient finances to formally register him by the end of the current season.
Moreover, if Barcelona do face legal action for playing the Spaniard as a senior player, they may find it difficult to defend themselves, which might allow another team to sign him.
