Although MU won 2-0 against Arsenal in the official 90 minutes, the two teams still had to enter the penalty shootout due to the rules of the friendly tournament in the US.
Although the match was only a pre-season friendly, both MU and Arsenal agreed to go to the penalty shootout, with the two coaches seeing it as the perfect opportunity to practice penalties in front of fans.
The penalty shootout will take place regardless of the score of the whole match. In fact, this is just a part of the match to thank the fans and is the annual regulation of friendly tournaments in the US.
This is not the first time United have taken part in pre-season penalties. In 2018, the Reds drew 1-1 with AC Milan in the International Champions Cup, and although no major trophies were awarded, both teams had to go to the penalty shootout.
The players of both teams performed very well in the series of “gunfights” and it was only when Milan’s Franck Kessie missed in the 9th kick, the results were determined. MU won with a penalty score of 9-8.
In the match just ended, MU defeated Arsenal with a score of 2-0 thanks to the goals of Bruno Fernandes (30 minutes) and Jadon Sancho (37 minutes).
In a series of gunfights at 11m after that, MU continued to win with a score of 5-3. All 5 shots of the Red Devils were successfully completed by Casemiro, Dalot, Lindelof, Rashford and Eriksen.
Meanwhile, Fabio Viera on the Arsenal side kicked off. The remaining 3 names on the Gunners side complete the task, including Odegaard, Trossard and Jorginho.
This was the Red Devils’ third consecutive victory in the 2022/23 pre-season friendly series. After this match, they have 5 more friendly matches against Wrexham (July 26), Real Madrid (July 27), Dortmund (July 31), Lens (August 5) and Bilbao (August 6).
