Curtis Jones has stated that Alexis MacAllister and Dominik Szoboszlai had pleased him during pre-season training in Liverpool.
The 22-year-old teenager spoke to the Liverpool Echo about the pair, who both came on Merseyside this summer and are likely to compete for midfield berths next season.
With Jones finishing the previous season on a high and then going one step further this summer with England’s U-21s, there’s a definite possibility that the midfielder will lose his starting berth to the new guys.
Despite the signings of Mac Allister and Szoboszlai, who the Liverpool academy graduate described as ‘world-class’ players, Jones seemed keen to preserve his position in the team.
“The lads who have come in this summer we know are world-class,” the midfielder added, “but I don’t think it changes anything for me in terms of how I think and what I’m doing.”
“I know that if I go out there and play, it will give me a chance to show that I am good enough to play in the next game.” It’s all my fault.”
Jones understands that starting positions at Liverpool are no longer assured.
Jones enters the new season in top form, having guided England’s U-21 side to glory this summer, but with Liverpool splashing out on new midfielders, the 22-year-old is well aware that starting spots are no longer assured.
With Trent Alexander-Arnold also anticipated to fully develop into a midfielder, breaking into the Liverpool starting XI has perhaps never been more difficult.
However, the teenager has often defied the odds with Liverpool’s senior team, and Jones is confident that he has the ability to make a name for himself at his boyhood club next season.
