Liverpool is working on a variety of projects this summer, with Jürgen Klopp’s team experiencing a slew of alterations throughout the field that must be integrated as soon as feasible.
The most significant adjustments have occurred in midfield. Six senior options will have left Liverpool since the end of last season if Fabinho now follows Jordan Henderson, who confirmed his departure last week, and Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai are the only ones through the door at the moment, though Roméo Lavia could be added.
However, there are additional issues that Liverpool employees must address. The offensive ranks have been completed in terms of new recruitment, but there will now be a war for positions, as well as other major decisions to be made.
Liverpool.com has looked at what the Reds need to do in the coming weeks, with an evaluation of some of the things we believe will ‘certainly’ happen before the transfer market closes in only 36 days.
The attacking pecking order is revealed
With Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota, and Cody Gakpo all currently fit and vying for starting slots, Jürgen Klopp has plenty to ponder about heading into the new season.
There will not be a ‘first choice’ front three, but Liverpool will have to select some players to face Chelsea on the first day of the new season, while others will have to skip out.
It is unlikely that all five forwards will be available for the full season, and with the Europa League, there will be plenty of opportunities for everyone.
However, as the friendlies continue, it will be fascinating to watch who emerges as the top contenders, particularly for the crowded number nine position, where three of the five desire to be.
New transfers have arrived
Liverpool has long adored Lavia, and according to Fabrizio Romano, a second bid worth $58 million (£45 million/€53 million) with add-ons is set to be submitted for the former Manchester City starlet.
More additions are expected this summer, according to Klopp, and Lavia cannot be the only one. In addition to him, another midfielder is required if both Fabinho and Jordan Henderson leave, and a defender would be a huge asset.
There are still doubts about both Jol Matip and Joe Gomez, and Liverpool could use another left-sided alternative, however it has to be seen who is pursued, with the midfield being the immediate focus.
Clarification of the midfield situation
It will be intriguing to observe how Liverpool lines up in midfield once the transfers arrive. If Fabinho leaves, a new holding midfielder is inevitable, while Alexis MacAllister and Dominik Szoboszlai will have to compete to steal Curtis Jones’ shirt after the way he concluded last season. Harvey Elliott is also in attendance.
There will be no one team that is guaranteed from start to finish, just as there will be no one team that is certain from start to finish in the attack, but Liverpool will have to find something towards a first-choice selection. For the first few weeks of the season, only a few spots will be locked down, and they will most likely be in the back four and in goal.
Loan choices have been made
Luke Chambers, a 19-year-old Preston-born defender, appears to be a potential prospect for loaning away, having impressed at Kilmarnock last season.
Others, however, could be prospective contenders. Ben Doak has impressed throughout preseason, although it is unclear how many minutes he will be able to play at the senior level for the Reds next season, while Bobby Clark is another who appears to be ready to take the next step.
There is a strong case to be made for all three of those young prospects to follow in the footsteps of Harvey Elliott and go to the top end of the Championship. All of these decisions will be made during the next two weeks.
