Another week, and more transfer speculations to whet Liverpool fans’ appetites as the new season approaches.
The Reds are now just a few weeks away from kicking off the 2023/24 Premier League season at Chelsea, and Jürgen Klopp still has plenty of work to do in the transfer market.
Despite the additions of Alex Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai earlier this summer, Liverpool will require additional midfield reinforcements after losing Jordan Henderson and with Fabinho appearing poised to follow him out the exit door to Saudi Arabia.
That’s before we get into the need for a new defender, with the Reds indicating in preseason that additional talent is needed to back up first-choice selections Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté.
The most recent speculations address this specific issue, with Liverpool being linked to a stunning attempt to steal a big-money move from Manchester City. Meanwhile, a former Chelsea player is being linked with a move to Anfield.
Gvardiol, Josko (RB Leipzig)
According to Fichajes, Liverpool might sabotage Manchester City’s pursuit of Josko Gvardiol.
The RB Leipzig defender has been linked with a move to the Etihad Stadium for much of the summer, but no agreement has been reached. According to a Spanish newspaper, Liverpool is on high alert amid a stalemate between Leipzig and Manchester City, and has even made an offer for the $109 million (£85 million/€99 million)-rated defender.
Gvardiol would be the ideal signing for Liverpool, according to Liverpool.com. He’s 21, has experience in European and international football, and is left-footed. There’s only one issue: the price.
Given that the Reds still need to acquire at least one new midfielder, it’s difficult to imagine them sneaking in ahead of Man City. If they do, they’d be foolish not to at least risk their arm.
Barcelona’s Andreas Christensen
Fichajes claims a ‘crazy’ offer for Andreas Christensen is being readied for Gvardiol, who isn’t the only defender being linked to Liverpool.
Barcelona recently rejected a $33 million (£26 million/€30 million) bid (according to Football365), but Liverpool is rumoured to be ready to try again. According to Spanish media, a $55 million (£43 million/€50 million) bid will be made in the coming days.
While Gvardiol would be an ideal addition for Liverpool, the same cannot be said about Christensen. For starters, he’s right-footed, and at 27, he’s not the typical age profile Klopp seeks.
That’s before you consider the Danish international’s lackluster performance at Chelsea. Add in some recent injury issues, and at $55 million, this is not a contract that makes sense for Liverpool.
