Liverpool have been advised that if Curtis Jones starts at the base of midfield this season, they will not win anything.
Pundit On ESPN FC, Steve Nicol discussed Liverpool’s midfield quandary.
Jurgen Klopp would have known that change was on the way in the center of the pitch for this team this summer.
When last season concluded, four midfielders were poised to leave at the end of their contracts.
Alexis MacAllister and Dominik Szoboszlai were on the shortlist to replace Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
The significant impact of the Saudi league, though, has been felt at Anfield, as Jordan Henderson and Fabinho have both left.
As a result, Liverpool is once again lacking in midfield, with Romeo Lavia the leading prospect to replace two Champions League-winning players.
However, it is possible that some of the club’s young players will be given more opportunities this season.
Liverpool will not win anything next year, according to Nicol, if Curtis Jones starts frequently as a holding midfielder.
Last year, the 22-year-old was outstanding, starring at the Under-21 European Championships.
However, Jones has rarely played as Liverpool’s deepest midfielder, which may be a concern.
If Jones starts, Liverpool will not win anything this season.”If Liverpool want to be pushing for the Premier League title or the Champions League, or any of the big prizes, they need someone who is going to be playing now and who is going to do the job,” Nicol said of Liverpool’s possibilities next year.
“They can’t wait for [Romeo] Lavia to recover or hope that [Curtis] Jones will fill in. That doesn’t bring you Premier League or Champions League titles.
“It’s a big problem right now.”
Jones is gearing up for a big season at Liverpool and will hope to play in as many games as possible.
He is not, however, a defensive midfielder, and playing in that position would be quite difficult for him.
This is especially true given Trent Alexander-Arnold’s potential permanent switch to midfield.
Whoever plays with him must compensate for his lack of expertise in that area, and Jones is not the best candidate.
