Gary Neville believes FSG are underestimating Jurgen Klopp and will put Liverpool in a terrible position soon.
Former Manchester United player (but hardly a legend, ask Roy Keane) and Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville believes Jurgen Klopp is not fully supported by Liverpool’s owners, and that the club’s transfer model might pose major difficulties.
The failed former Valencia manager also thinks that they should have tried to get a player like Moises Caicedo to remedy the defensive midfield problem rather than saving money by signing Romeo Lavia from Southampton.
Neville may have stated these things to get the attention of Liverpool fans, but he is unfortunately correct. The market trend appears to have moved beyond FSG’s transfer model at Liverpool.
Here’s what the former England fullback had to say about it (via The Overlap and Liverpool Echo):
“I think with Liverpool, in the last two years Chelsea has spent a lot, Arsenal has spent a lot, [Man] United has spent a lot, and City is City.” I believe it has caught the owners off guard; they lack the financial resources to compete.
“I think the market has shocked them, the [Jude] Bellingham £100m deal, the [Declan] Rice £100m-odd deal, [Enzo] Fernandez, [Moises] Caicedo, they’re [Liverpool] at that £50m or £60m and they’re comfortable there, but I think they’ve hit a lower ceiling than the other four or five clubs.”
“He needs that money to compete; they should go get Caicedo for him and say, ‘there you go, that’s dealt with and sorted.'” They’re attempting to get someone from Southampton for £40 million; he’s a fine player, but Jurgen Klopp requires the real thing.”
I completely agree with what Neville is stating here. Since winning the league in 2020, there has been something wrong with Liverpool’s approach to transfer windows.
During the 2020/21 season, when centre-backs were in short supply and we required a defender in January, the club paid the fee to bring in Ibrahima Konate early and instead bought Ozan Kabak and Ben Davies on loan. Since departing that summer, neither of the latter two have achieved elite status in the footballing world.
When the team was desperate for a midfielder last summer, it pursued Aurelien Tchouameni, who ultimately selected Real Madrid. Following that, it appeared as if they lacked a backup plan. As a result, they went out and signed Arthur Melo on loan, of all people.
Now, while it appeared that they would be forced to spend massively this summer because to how poor the squad was last season, that has not been the case thus far. They chose the easy way out by abandoning the Jude Bellingham chase. In addition, we have signed two senior players and released seven. Make whatever you want outta it!
