EXCL: Klopp sees 25 y/o ‘running machine’ as successor to £160k/week Liverpool star

Liverpool are interested in signing Brighton left-back Pervis Estupián as a long-term replacement for Andy Robertson, despite reservations over his fitness.

When in possession, Jurgen Klopp now employs a 3-2-2-3 formation, with Trent Alexander-Arnold inverting into a holding midfielder role and Andy Robertson tucking inside into a left centre-back role.

Arsenal bought Jurien Timber, and his performance in a similar capacity versus Manchester City demonstrates that Liverpool can overcome tactical problems in their roster through acquisitions.

Klopp wants Estupián

According to Football Transfers’ Steve Kay, their sources say “Jurgen Klopp is a huge fan of the Ecuadorian and sees the left-back as an eventual replacement for Andy Robertson.”

According to the report, Liverpool had a chance to get him last summer before he joined Brighton from Villarreal.

Liverpool were reportedly offered the option to sign Estupián when negotiating for Carlos Soler, but felt that Robertson would suffice at the time.

Liverpool have now allegedly examined Robertson’s fitness, prompting them to “reconsider their options and explore alternatives – Estupián is seen as a player who could succeed the Scotsman.”

Would Estupinan be a good fit for Liverpool’s style of play?

If Klopp keeps the current system in place, in which the left-back is given more defensive duty than the right-back, a traditional left-back will struggle at Anfield.

Estupinan is a superb player, but his best qualities would be undermined if he was required to tuck in at left center-back. At Brighton, he flourished when given the opportunity to bomb forward and provide an extra option on the wing.

Even if he does not fit the new Liverpool system completely, his Premier League experience is a huge bonus.

He is four years younger than Robertson, at the age of 25. Despite his troubles with form at the start of last season, the former Hull City defender may acquire confidence and understanding of his tactical responsibilities as the season progresses.

After signing a new contract for £160,000 per week in 2021, Robertson is under contract with Liverpool until 2026.
