Jurgen Klopp acknowledges he was “wrong” after being called a hypocrite for his comments about Paul Pogba, with Liverpool asking £110 million for Moises Caicedo.
The Reds outbid Chelsea for Brighton midfielder Caicedo, paying a British record £110 million ($140 million). The Ecuadorian will now play at Anfield, where he will rejoin with Alexis MacAllister.
However, Klopp’s comments in 2016 against Manchester United’s £89 million acquisition of Paul Pogba have come back to haunt him after this signing. The German even threatened to quit football if he paid £100 million on a player.
“If you bring in one player for £100 million and he gets injured, it all goes down the chimney.” I’m out of a job the day this is football, since the game is about playing together. Other clubs can spend more money to acquire top players. I’d like to do things differently. “I would do it differently if I had that money,” he had remarked.
However, upon Caicedo’s transfer, the manager stated that he was “wrong” in his assessment and that things have “changed” since then.
“Everything was different. Is it appealing to me? No. Did I realize I was mistaken? Yes. “That’s how it goes,” he explained to reporters before facing Chelsea.
“Saudi Arabia will not assist with this.” Finally, we must make every effort to assemble the best possible team. 50% will like it and 50% will dislike it. We’re putting together the greatest team possible. We cannot simply point to players and bring them in; there is much work to be done. When one door shuts, another one opens. No issue if somebody want to hurl my quotes from five years ago. “I realize I was mistaken,” he continued.
Although Klopp stated that the Caicedo transfer was completed, he did not say if the player will have his physical on Friday, potentially making him eligible for the Chelsea game.
“The fee with the club has been agreed upon.” We’ll see what that entails. We are not a club with unlimited resources, and we did not anticipate a few of things happening this summer. “And then it happened,” he explained.
When asked about Caicedo’s medical, he answered, “I cannot say.” “I’m not sure.”
