Manchester United midfielder Fred is set to join Fenerbahce after reaching an agreement with the Turkish Super Lig giants, as reported by 90min. Fred, who made 56 appearances for United last season, played a backup role and started only 12 times in the Premier League. The competition for midfield positions intensified with the arrivals of Mason Mount, Christian Eriksen, and Casemiro, pushing Fred down the pecking order at Old Trafford.
While Fulham and Nottingham Forest showed interest in the Brazilian midfielder, they were not willing to meet the asking price. Roma also inquired about Fred but did not pursue further negotiations. In mid-July, Galatasaray’s offer was rejected as it fell short of the £20 million valuation. However, United has now agreed to a reduced transfer fee.
The deal with Fenerbahce is worth £13 million (€15 million), including additional add-ons. Fred opted against a move to the Saudi Pro League, which has seen several Premier League players such as N’Golo Kante, Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, and Ruben Neves join this summer.
Fred’s departure from Manchester United is likely to result in the number 17 shirt being handed to new signing Rasmus Hojlund, a Danish striker currently recovering from a preseason injury. Hojlund, who previously wore the number 17 at Atalanta, is yet to be assigned a squad number for his debut with the club.
