Liverpool in race to sign new defender, Reds already agreed terms

According to sources in Germany, Liverpool and Manchester United are ready to compete for the signing of Benjamin Pavard, as both sides seek to strengthen their defensive options.

The first Premier League game of the new season highlighted that Jurgen Klopp’s team desperately needs a new defensive midfielder.

The German also requires a new defender to fit into his new-look system, which includes three defenders while the team is in possession.

Andy Robertson has struggled to adjust to his increased responsibilities, and Liverpool appear to be seeking for ways to strengthen their defense.

Liverpool and Manchester United are prepared to engage in a transfer war.

Last month, reliable German football reporter Christian Falk stated that Liverpool were in talks with Benjamin Pavard’s representatives about a summer move to Anfield.

The defender was on the verge of agreeing personal terms with Manchester United, but German tabloid Sport Bild says that he has now signed to terms with Erik ten Hag’s squad.

Significantly, Jurgen Klopp is keen in bringing the Frenchman to Anfield and has had him on his transfer list “since the start of the window.”

What role might Benjamin Pavard play at Liverpool?

Trent Alexander-Arnold is venturing more infield than ever before in Liverpool’s new look system, allowing the skilled Scouser to have a much greater effect when his side is in possession.

The problem is that the area he leaves behind is far larger than ever before.

Liverpool are fortunate that Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino made the unexpected choice to deploy Mykhailo Mudryk on the right wing when he came off the bench during Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge.

Moving Pavard to Anfield would allow Klopp to use the Frenchman at right back, unlocking Alexander-Arnold’s creative potential even further.

The aim this summer is to get a new No.6, since it is evident that Liverpool will struggle to find success this season without a holding midfielder to defend the back four.
