McTominay’s winning goal, Maguire & Martial got minutes – What happened in Manchester United vs Everton closed-doors friendly

Anthony Martial made his first appearance for Manchester United in 79 days in a friendly triumph over Everton behind closed doors.

United won their midday kick-off at their Carrington training complex thanks to an own goal and a second-half strike from Scott McTominay.

McTominay, Harry Maguire, Donny van de Beek, Hannibal Mejbri, and Dan Gore were among United’s other starters who saw action following their Premier League opener against Wolves on Monday evening.

Martial last appeared for United as a substitute against Fulham on May 27, when he tore his hamstring.

Martial, 27, returned to team training three weeks ago in San Diego, but he did not participate in pre-season and was an unused substitute against Wolves.

Everton’s team included numerous under-21 players, including Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Arnaut Danjuma, Jarnaut Branthwaite, Ben Godfrey, and Vitalii Mykolenko.

Everton were defeated 1-0 at home by Fulham in their league opener on Saturday at Goodison Park.

This is the fourth year in a row that United has played behind closed doors at the start of the season. Their only friendly during the short period between seasons in 2020 was a 1-0 loss at Aston Villa, and United hosted Burnley at Old Trafford the following year.

Wrexham and Halifax both came to Carrington for August friendly last year, while Everton played United there in December before the domestic season resumed following the World Cup.
