After a strange video of Manchester United winger Antony celebrating a goal against Sao Paulo was uploaded to his Instagram, the fanbase made fun of the player. Antony imitated Erik ten Hag’s transfer from Ajax to Old Trafford when he signed for United last summer for £85 million. The Brazilian international, though, had a challenging debut season in English football. In 45 games for United across all leagues, Antony has eight goals and three assists to his credit.
The 23-year-old has drawn criticism from United supporters due to his inconsistent behavior and bad judgment, though. Fans on and off the field are now closely examining Antony’s activities. In fact, a video of the winger celebrating a Sao Paulo goal in a Copa de Brazil match against Corinthians that the former team won 3-2 overall has gone viral online.
Antony, who progressed through the Sao Paulo junior systems before joining Ajax in 2020, is shown in the video below standing topless in his living room in front of the screen and raising his fist in joy. The athlete received harsh criticism from followers on X, formerly known as Twitter. One person said: “Meanwhile he is making us shed tears. He needs to go back to sapa lo.”
Another wrote: “Antony is finished at 23.”
A third person said: “Let’s hope he scores soon too.”
In defence of the attacker, another person insisted: “Antony is a great player, but I forgot people on Twitter know more ball than Ten Hag.”
Last Saturday, United star Gary Neville said that for the Old Trafford team to have a chance of winning the title, Antony would need to “explode” this season.
Neville said that United challenging for the Premier League title this season is “unrealistic” following United’s close 1-0 victory over Wolves.
There will be many who believe Manchester United ought to be a title contender right now, Neville told Sky Sports.
But honestly, I believe it would be unfair to suggest that Manchester United should be in the title race given where Arsenal are, how they have filled out their roster this summer, and how well-established Manchester City are pitch.
“For it to happen, Marcus Rashford would have to reach the same stats, Rasmus Hojlund, Mason Mount, and Andre Onana would have to immediately drop to the ground, and Antony would have to go off this season.
“That is challenging; Hojlund is young, and Onana has accepted the pressure-cooker position in English football at Manchester United.
“I still believe that third place and a trophy would be a success, but I can appreciate the pressure given the amount of money they spent while Erik ten Hag was in charge.”
