Deuce Vaughn, a rookie rushing back for the Dallas Cowboys, had to wait until the second half to receive a carry, but when he did, he made it count.
Vaughn scored his second preseason touchdown in Week 2 of the NFL preseason against the Seattle Seahawks on his first carry attempt of 13 yards. Of course, he did it in grand style.
Vaughn sprinted to his left before making a brief cut at the second level, with two pulling offensive lineman leading the way. Vaughn hit the spin button as the crashing safety arrived and managed to shake off the tackle.
A fraction of a second later, the Cowboys’ 5-foot-5 running back was strolling into the end zone by himself.
It was yet another major play in Vaughn’s two-game Dallas career. Since his arrival, he’s done nothing but prove himself to be the real deal. While his height has been a source of concern since he was selected in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft, it has not been an issue thus far.
In fact, you could argue that his bulk is a strength since he exploits it to hide from defenders and avoid them in novel ways.
There is no doubt that the former Kansas State standout will make the 53-man roster. Right now, Vaughn’s only goal is to overtake Malik Davis and Rico Dowdle on the running back depth chart (both of whom have played ahead of him in the first two preseason games).
Plays like this are compelling the Cowboys to play him with the first team. Let’s hope Vaughn can continue to build on a solid start to his career.
