Isn’t it true that there is always that one player? The player you know could accomplish fantastic things for the team if they could only play a few more games before getting hurt again. From Daniel Agger to Daniel Sturridge to Naby Keta and now Joe Gomez, Liverpool’s list of those guys appears infinite.
In 2015, Gomez joined Liverpool. He hurt his knee very quickly and was out for over a year after surgery. After that, there was an Achilles problem, then his ankles, and finally his patella — all of which required extensive recuperation time. The man just can’t seem to get a break.
Gomez spoke with Jacamo and CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably), an organization that seeks to prevent suicide in the UK, as part of a new Adidas sportswear launch. Gomez opened up about how these injuries impacted his mental health and how he got through it.
“Once I got injured, I had a lot of spare time, and I think that’s the biggest thing you notice as a player, that when you’re on the pitch training, you don’t have time to be thinking, you’re just in your subconscious enjoying the game,” he stated.
“I had a couple of minor injuries, and then my last one with my hamstring was a major one that really rocked my world.” It increased my appreciation.
“Aside from doing the work I needed to do, once I got back into football, I had other battles with worrying about my body and things I couldn’t control.” It’s just gratitude and thankfulness that I can still do what I do. And leaning on that to keep me motivated to continue doing my gym sessions even when we return from an away game.
“I just remember, aside from that, just enjoying it in those tough moments.”
Gomez is 26 years old and should be nearing the top of his game. He is currently injury-free and appeared late in Liverpool’s win over Bournemouth on Saturday. If he continues to perform well, Klopp will almost probably give him a job in the defense this season. He only needs to maintain his health for more than two weeks at a time first.
