Report: Patriots waive injured WR to make room for NT they claimed from Panthers

After obtaining a defensive tackle from the Panthers, the Patriots let go of an injured wide receiver.

According to a report from Field Yates of ESPN, the Patriots have claimed nose tackle Marquan McCall off of waivers from the Panthers. McCall signed with Carolina in 2022 after being undrafted, and he was a member of the Panthers’ roster for the previous season. The 24-year-old player finished his first season with 15 tackles to his credit.

Patriots claim defender off waivers from Panthers, cut WR – Boston Herald

McCall was initially listed as the starting nose tackle for the Panthers on their depth chart during training camp. However, on Monday, the team announced that they would be waiving McCall because coach Frank Reich felt that he was not the best match for Carolina’s “scheme and style.” He also said that they decided to release McCall at the time they did because they thought another club would take him up, which turned out to be the Patriots.

According to a report by ESPN’s Mike Reiss, the Patriots released wide receiver Tre Nixon, who suffered an injury during New England’s preseason game against the Green Bay Packers over the weekend. This move allowed the Patriots to create place for McCall on their 90-man roster.

Patriots Waive Injured Receiver To Add Defensive Tackle

In the event that Nixon is not claimed, he will be put on injured reserve immediately.

The incident occurred in the second quarter when Packers safety Anthony Johnson landed awkwardly on the 25-year-old Nixon when Nixon was attempting to grab a long ball from Bailey Zappe. Nixon suffered a shoulder injury as a result of the fall. He stayed on the ground, grimacing visibly in agony while clutching his shoulder for many minutes. Prior to the rest of the game being determined to be unplayable for Nixon, he went inside the blue medical tent.

Patriots release update on injured CB Isaiah Bolden

He has not participated in an NFL game due to the fact that he was on the practice squad with the Patriots for the last two seasons. Nixon was already competing for a place on the 53-man roster despite the fact that the receiver room of New England’s team was rather packed.
