Montreal Canadiens Jean Béliveau was the first hockey player to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

Jean Béliveau, who played for the Montreal Canadiens, is credited as being the first hockey player to feature on the cover of Sports Illustrated. 

Beliveau ended up winning the Hart Memorial Trophy (Most Valuable Player) and the Art Ross Trophy (Top Point Scorer) at the end of the season, proving that the cover that was published on January 23, 1956 was not a jinx.
