Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool face another difficult away encounter in the early weeks of the new season, with the Reds due to play Newcastle United a fortnight after drawing with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Between those two games, the team defeated Bournemouth 3-1. Despite being sent off in that game, Alexis Mac Allister will be eligible after his ban for the red card was overturned.
Ibrahima Konaté, on the other hand, is expected to miss the game due to an injury. In his pre-match press conference on Friday, Klopp provided an update, claiming that the French defEndoer was suffering from a’muscle’ problem. In his absence, Jol Matip is set to start, with Joe Gomez another option who might play alongside Virgil van Dijk.
Thiago Alcântara and Curtis Jones are also expected to miss the game. Klopp said that the midfield two will return to training on Monday, although they are not expected to play here.
Wataru Endo, on the other hand, might make his full debut, allowing Mac Allister to play higher up the pitch alongside Dominik Szoboszlai, potentially completing a midfield trio comprising all Liverpool’s summer arrivals.
Darwin Nunez will be hoping for his first start of the season up forward, but he will have to compete with Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo for the number nine spot. Luis Daz and Mohamed Salah are locks to start the game.
The entire list of players available to the manager is available here on Liverpool.com, as Liverpool tries to make it seven points from its first three Premier League matches of 2023/24.
