Chelsea’s homepage announced that it has officially signed goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic from New England Revolution in the US professional tournament for a fee of £ 14 million.
“Chelsea have completed the signing of goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic from MLS’s New England Revolution. The 23-year-old, two-time Serbia international has agreed a seven-year contract at Stamford Bridge, with subject to an extension of 1 year,” Chelsea’s homepage announced.
Upon completing the transfer, Petrovic said: “I am very happy to be at Chelsea and I am really excited to start at this club.
It’s a big step for me and I’ve always dreamed of signing for one of the biggest clubs in the world. Today I achieved that goal and I am very happy.
Playing in the Premier League is something I really look forward to doing and I hope to learn a lot from Chelsea. I can’t wait to meet everyone and play at Stamford Bridge.”
Sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart said: “We are delighted to welcome Djordje to the team. His performance in the MLS has earned him the praise and recognition it deserves, and has helped keep Djordje on board. He’s preparing for the challenge of playing for Chelsea.
We look forward to seeing him work under Mauricio Pochettino, goalkeeping coach Toni Jimenez and the rest of the first team this season.”
Petrovic began his career in his native Serbia, playing for both Rudar Kostolac and Presing Pozarevac before joining Cukaricki in 2014. After advancing at youth level and spending time on loan at FK IMT, his team debut. Petrovic’s one for Cukaricki was against Mladost in 2019. Since then, Petrovic has established himself as the number one choice.
The 23-year-old, 1m94-tall goalkeeper made 86 appearances for Cukaricki before completing his move to the New England Revolution in April 2022. Petrovic quickly became the mainstay of the MLS team. He made 21 appearances in the 2022 campaign and was nominated for the MLS New Player of the Year and Goalkeeper of the Year awards.
Petrovic’s presence helps Chelsea get their 11th signing this summer, after Nicolas Jackson (£32m), Christopher Nkunku (52), Diego Moreira (free), Angelo Gabriel (13), Lesley Ugochukwu (23), Axel Disasi (38), Robert Sanchez (25), Moises Caicedo (100), Romeo Lavia (53), Deivid Washington (13,7).
