Virgil van Dijk of Liverpool was awarded a straight red card against Newcastle after a foul on Alexander Isak.
With Isak coming down on goal, the Dutch defender brought the Swedish international down outside the Newcastle area.
The initial decision by referee John Brooks, which was then examined and cleared by VAR, startled both Van Dijk and manager Jurgen Klopp.
Van Dijk won the ball in his tackle on Isak, but was ruled to have gone through the back of the forward to knock him down.
Even after the VAR review, the Dutchman was spotted in active discussion with the referee, Klopp, and the rest of the Liverpool coaching staff as he made his way to the bench.
Liverpool had already fallen behind 1-0 when Trent Alexander-Arnold failed to manage Mohamed Salah’s backpass.
Anthony Gordon pounced on the lost ball before sending a low attempt past Alisson to give Newcastle the lead.
However, Van Dijk’s dismissal has increased the Reds’ chances of avoiding their first Premier League defeat of the season.
The match began with controversy after Alexander-Arnold avoided a second yellow card for a pullback on Gordon.
After being pushed off the ground by Gordon, the Liverpool right-back was booked for dissent before grabbing hold of his shirt once play began.
But, while the England international escaped with a draw, Van Dijk was not so lucky.
Klopp acted immediately to replace striker Luis Diaz with Joe Gomez in an attempt to fill the vacuum left by the Dutchman, but the Reds have an uphill battle to regain control of the game with only 10 players.
Surprisingly, Van Dijk has never been issued a red card in his Liverpool career, despite making over 200 appearances in all competitions.
