Dak Prescott has revealed that the Dallas Cowboys did not provide him with any advance information of the trade for Trey Lance.
The Cowboys agreed to a deal with the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for Lance and a future fourth-round draft pick. Lance was the No. 3 overall pick in 2021, but he was unable to establish himself as a starter with the Niners.
Lance will now begin his third season in the NFL with the Texas Rangers. He’ll be in the QB room in Dallas with Prescott and Cooper Rush, and he’ll likely be No. 3 in the standings heading into the next season.
The Cowboys later revealed that they would release quarterback Will Grier as a result of the deal. Dallas used the 29-year-old in the final preseason game of the summer, a 31-16 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders, in which he threw two touchdown touchdowns, 305 yards passing, and zero interceptions.
Prescott has responded to Dallas’ recent business, which included Lance’s entrance and Grier’s departure. The veteran quarterback confessed that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones did not discuss the transactions with him before they were made public.
“I can’t say that I necessarily expected [a heads-up], no,” Prescott told ESPN. “I understand, however, that that is business.” I realize they’re probably on a deadline and need to get things done. He believed it improved the team and, yeah, ready to welcome [Lance] and, yeah, knowing the power of our quarterback room.”
Prescott also texted Grier after learning that he would be released following the Raiders game. Prescott commended Grier’s work ethic and expressed sympathy for his now-former teammate.

“Right now, my heart and mind are with Will,” Prescott admitted. “To be honest, it’s a difficult scenario.
“I adore that guy over there. Every day, he plays his a off, comes in, and prepares properly.”
Dallas has completed its summer preseason games and will now prepare for the start of the 2023 NFL regular season. This will begin with a road game against NFC East divisional rivals the New York Giants on September 10, followed by the first home game of the season against the New York Jets in Week Two on September 17.
