After Friday night’s thrilling triumph over Newcastle United, left-back Andy Robertson lauded teammate Joe Gomez. Following Virgil van Dijk’s red card, England’s star gave calm to the Liverpool squad.
After Van Dijk’s attempt to block Alexander Isak in the 28th minute, the Reds were reduced to 10 men in the first half. Jurgen Klopp promptly substituted Luis Diaz and brought in Gomez to shore up the defense.
Liverpool was ahead 1-0 at the moment, but Darwin Nunez’s two late goals enabled them take all three emotional points.
After the game, Robertson spoke with Premier League Productions about Gomez’s performance and ability to improve the spirits of his teammates.
“I think Joey was absolutely brilliant at his job,” he remarked. He came on at a critical juncture in the game, when we were trailing 1-0 with only 10 men and the game appeared to be heading in one direction.
Joey, on the other hand, calmed us down. He began to touch the ball and make passes. He was terrific for 60-70 minutes, in my opinion.”
With this result, Liverpool is still unblemished in the 2023/2024 Premier League after three games and now sits fourth in the table.
Meanwhile, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp compared the victory over Newcastle United to a comeback against Barcelona.
Jurgen Klopp believes that the recent win against Newcastle United was more tough than the 4-0 win over Barcelona in the 2018/2019 Champions League.
After the game, Klopp told the reporters that his team played tighter when there were just 10 men remaining. He stated:
“The game was much more difficult than the one we played at home against Barcelona that year.” We lost the first leg 3-0, but we knew if we defended well, we might make things difficult for Barcelona.”
The encounter versus Newcastle was deemed more difficult by Klopp than the match against Barcelona.
“This game is completely different,” Klopp added. We got off to a shaky start, surrendering a goal and receiving a red card. We actually played better after that.
Newcastle struggled to dominate the game as we played closer and fought harder.”
This weekend, Liverpool will play Aston Villa in the Premier League before making way for the national squad. When the clubs meet again in September, the Reds will face Wolverhampton Wanderers, West Ham United, and Tottenham Hotspur.
