Before anything else, the NFL is a company, and in business, difficult decisions must be made. Rosters must be reduced from 90 to 53 men by Tuesday afternoon, and the Dallas Cowboys face numerous difficult decisions.
The league has revised its off-season roster standards in recent years, and there will be no intermediate cuts in 2023. Cuts used to be spread out over several weeks, but with fewer games and preparation time, the league allows teams to keep everyone on hand until after the last game. That is significant for clubs like Mike McCarthy’s Cowboys, who are doing everything they can to avoid playing key regular-season players.
