EXCL: THREE center-backs now on Liverpool ‘shortlist’ to upgrade Klopp’s defense

With Virgil van Dijk facing punishment and Ibrahima Konate nursing a muscle issue, Liverpool’s defensive ranks are looking a little thin these days. Joel Matip’s return to the pitch in Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Newcastle was a nice sight, but it’s evident that Jurgen Klopp needs additional options at the heart of his defense.

THE VAN DIJK MYSTERY

Liverpool’s need for a trustworthy center-back has been exacerbated by Van Dijk’s recent red card against Newcastle. The Dutchman will miss the forthcoming match against an in-form Aston Villa, leaving Klopp with little options. Although Joe Gomez and teenage prospect Jarell Quansah stepped up, the depth issue remains a concern as the transfer deadline approaches.

THE LEFT-FOOTED SOLUTION OF GONCALO INACIO

Liverpool’s scouting department has been hunting for a left-footed center-back, and Sporting Lisbon’s Goncalo Inacio appears to be a good fit. The 22-year-old Portuguese international has already made over 120 club games. Although Inacio’s contract was recently extended, increasing his release clause from £38.6 million to £51.5 million, Liverpool have demonstrated a predilection for triggering release clauses this summer, as evidenced by the signings of Alexis MacAllister and Dominik Szoboszlai.

THE DUTCH CONNECTION OF PERR SCHUURS

Liverpool are also interested in Perr Schuurs, who is presently playing for Torino. The 23-year-old Dutchman might be an excellent partner for Van Dijk. Schuurs, who joined Serie A from Ajax, is not left-footed but fits the age profile that Klopp prefers. The defender is also said to be on Arsenal’s wishlist, adding interest to the closing days of the transfer season.

MARC GUEHI: PRODIGY FOR THE PREMIER LEAGUE

Marc Guehi of Crystal Palace is another name that has been mentioned. The former Chelsea man has been an outstanding performer for Palace, attracting interest from a number of elite teams, including Manchester United and Arsenal. Guehi brings Premier League experience to the table, having been in the division 76 times. Despite being right-footed, he is at ease playing on the left side of the defense.
