Man United abandoned the Cucurella deal, successfully recruited Sergio Reguilon

It seemed like the Marc Cucurella deal had been completed, but MU suddenly changed its mind at the last minute and recruited Sergio Reguilon from Tottenham.

MU wants to bring in a left-back at the end of the summer market after Luke Shaw’s injury and many options have been proposed. Among them, Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella was the top priority and there was a time when the two sides were very close to a contract.

However, not long before the summer transfer season ended, MU changed its mind and switched to another player. Sources from The Athletic said MU reached a verbal agreement with Sergio Reguilon from Tottenham and this player will arrive at Old Trafford on loan.

The 26-year-old defender has completed the medical examination at MU and is ready to debut with coach Erik ten Hag’s team. Reguilon will join Man Utd on a season-long loan deal. MU does not have to pay a player loan fee to Tottenham and also does not have a buyout option built into the contract.

MU will pay the entire salary for Reguilon until the end of the contract. Worth mentioning, that the contract between the two parties has a contract termination clause in January 2024. Accordingly, MU has the right to return Reguilon to Tottenham next January, in case Luke Shaw and Malacia are eligible to play.

This is also a key point for MU to finalize the recruitment of Reguilon instead of Cucurella. The Chelsea defender did not agree to leave MU before the end of next season, because then Cucurella will not leave Chelsea to join another team for the rest of the season.

If nothing changes, Reguilon is eligible to wear for MU right in the match against Arsenal this weekend. MU will also try to complete two contracts with Amrabat and Altay Bayindir on the last day of the summer market.
