In the NFL, anything involving Tom Brady is considered legendary. The New England Patriots selecting TB 12 199th overall in the 2000 NFL Draft is recognized as the largest theft in NFL history. The Patriots have released a never-before-heard audio tape of Tom Brady’s call with the franchise shortly after he was chosen in 2000, months after his departure from the NFL.
With only one week until the Patriots commemorate Tom Brady’s legacy against the Philadelphia Eagles in their season opener, the audio revelation couldn’t have come at a better time. The call, which was taped on April 16, 2000, is now available, and the Patriots have obviously pumped it up.
A Look Back in Time: Tom Brady’s Phone Call in the Year 2000
Brady was asked about his job as a backup to Drew Bledsoe during the conversation, to which he said, “All I was looking for was a place to get my foot in the door and try to be great for the team that picked me.” And, of course, Drew Bledsoe is one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL.”
Brady was then queried about his draft pick, saying, “Tom, you were projected to go a little higher than this.” “Are you dissatisfied?” “I don’t think disappointed is the word,” Tom responded. It’s simply a fantastic opportunity to return to New England and play for the Patriots. It has undoubtedly been a dream come true.”
The Patriots’ brass seemed concerned about Brady’s aggressiveness, prompting them to inquire, “There was a report at the end of the year that you finished at 195. How are you feeling physically right now? “How do you feel right now?” Brady responded firmly, “I’m around 213, 214.” I lost a lot of weight. I was working hard to increase my speed and agility. And at the time, I had been unwell for a few days, and my natural weight is around 210.”
Even as a young quarterback picked 199th overall, Tom Brady was extremely clear about what he wanted out of life from the start. This speaks volumes about Brady’s confidence and approach in his play over the past two decades at the highest level.
