Liverpool will want to end the international break on a high note when it plays Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday.
The Reds have had a solid start to the season, winning two and drawing one of their first three games, but they will face a difficult test against a team that qualified for Europe last season.
Villa is just one point behind Liverpool in the early table after bouncing back from a thrashing at the hands of Newcastle United.
It will undoubtedly like its chances against a depleted Reds defense, with Virgil van Dijk suspended and Ibrahima Konaté still injured.
Van Dijk is suspended for this game after receiving a red card for denying a goal scoring opportunity against Newcastle last weekend, and there’s also a chance he’ll miss the trip to Wolves after the international break after being charged with using ‘abusive and/or insulting’ language towards a match official.
Meanwhile, Konaté missed the trip to St James’ Park due to a muscular ailment, and Jürgen Klopp acknowledged in his pre-match news conference on Friday that this match would be too soon as well (via Liverpool’s official website).
In midfield, the German has both good and bad news, with Curtis Jones returning available for selection but Thiago remains out due to a setback (again, via Liverpool’s official website). Jones was injured and missed the games against Bournemouth and Newcastle, but he has been working with his teammates this week and might play.
Thiago hasn’t played since late April after having hip surgery, and while it was anticipated he’d be back in action this week, Liverpool’s recovery plan has hit a hitch.
Signing deadline day Meanwhile, Ryan Gravenberch will have to watch from the stands because he was not registered in time to play. His debut is expected after the international break.
