As well as Liverpool has done in the transfer market this summer, there will always be players that fall through the cracks for whatever reason. That’s just the way football is. Even with Jürgen Klopp’s attractiveness, players may reject the club due to a variety of causes.
Jesper Lindstrom’s situation, on the other hand, is extremely intriguing. The 23-year-old Danish international footballer is a lifelong Liverpool supporter who has previously expressed his admiration for the club.
“I’ve always said that I’m a Liverpool fan, so it could be really cool to play for Liverpool at some point,” Lindstrom previously stated on TV 2’s ‘Frstevaelger,’ according to the ECHO.
That opportunity apparently presented itself for Lindstrom this summer, but the move wasn’t quite right this time, with the young Dane saying he turned down a move to Anfield.
“It was Liverpool, and I am a Liverpool supporter, so it would’ve been a madly fascinating experience, but would it have been an intelligent move?” he stated via Football Italia.
“If I’m not playing, I might as well sit in front of the TV and watch them play there while I’m at another club.” I’ve reached the age where I must play football.
“This is why I believe Napoli represents a positive change.” It is one of the top clubs in the world, and they have assured me that I will have plenty of opportunity to play.”
Last season, Lindstrom has nine goals and four assists in 38 games for Frankfurt. He has now earned a major move to Napoli, where he will try to win back-to-back Scudettos for the Italian superpower.
Given the level of competition at Liverpool, it’s difficult to blame him for turning down a transfer to Anfield this summer. Especially since Lindstrom prefers to play on the right wing, where he would have faced Mohamed Salah in the starting XI.
However, a move to Naples does not remove him from Liverpool’s sights. Even this summer, after only a season, the club sold Kim Min-jae to Bayern Munich, and it has always been open to conducting business.
And, of course, the situation at Liverpool may have changed by next summer. With all of the rumors around Salah’s future, it’s certainly possible that the Egyptian will be on the move next year, given that he’ll only have one year remaining on his deal.
With a strong season under his belt at Napoli, Lindstrom might be one of the men Liverpool considers to replace Salah.
And if that is the case, the Dane may be persuaded to reconsider his summer decision.
There are several moving aspects surrounding that idea, and it is dependent on Lindstrom having a significant influence at Napoli. But he is a talented player with every opportunity of succeeding. As a result, he is absolutely someone to keep an eye on.
Despite turning down a move to Anfield, his goal of playing for Liverpool is far from down.
