Dominik Szoboszlai proudly shows off Liverpool legend’s quote tattoo, claiming he’s very happy to join Liverpool

Dominik Szoboszlai, a summer acquisition, on his Steven Gerrard tattoo and not thinking about the Champions League before joining Liverpool.

Dominik Szoboszlai discussed his Steven Gerrard tattoo and why he did not consider missing out on Champions League action this season before joining Liverpool.

In the first week of July, Liverpool paid the release clause in his RB Leipzig contract to capture the Hungary captain. He has been in every preseason game and has improved with each passing minute.

Jurgen Klopp has primarily used the 22-year-old as a direct replacement for departing captain Jordan Henderson on the right side of midfield.

Here’s what Szoboszlai had to say about the tattoo, which featured a Gerrard quote – ‘God gives you talent, but if you don’t work and sacrifice a lot, it will mean nothing’ – and the long-term vision involved in signing for Liverpool (h/t The Athletic, subscription required):

“(Cristiano) Ronaldo was my idol, but I would also watch Liverpool and other teams play.” Gerrard was one of the most important players in my childhood.

“Now, wearing the No. 8 is a pleasure and makes me proud.” But I want to do things my way.

“The manager is a sensitive individual.” He invests everything he has and expects us to do the same. If we all do this, we will be able to compete for the top honors.

“Of course, everyone wants to play in the Champions League, but when I heard Liverpool wanted to sign me, I didn’t think about that.” You must work for it. I wasn’t even thinking about the Champions League. All I want to do now is bring us back there — where we belong.”

There are two ways to become a football club legend. One way is by showing up when the team is at its best and assisting in important games. The second is to accompany them through a transition period and push them to return to where they belong.

According to what Szoboszlai said, he is definitely in the latter side. He has ruled out participating in the Champions League for a season to help Liverpool return to the competition in 12 months.

That kind of mentality indicates that the 22-year-old will enjoy playing for the Reds and is determined to do everything in his power to help the club realize its full potential in the coming months and years.

There’s also the tiny matter of Hungary’s captain being a fantastic player. He can provide goals from midfield and work hard off the ball to aid the team’s defensive transition. Overall, a fantastic signing both tactically and mentally.
