Van Dijk’s heated reactions to the referee after the red card in the match against Newcastle made the Dutch midfielder pay a very high price.
In the 29th minute of the great match Liverpool – Newcastle, Van Dijk received a direct red card after fouling Isak right in front of the penalty area. Not accepting this penalty, Liverpool’s captain became angry and repeatedly shouted at referee John Brooks and goal referee Craig Pawson.
British media analyzed his mouth and said that Van Dijk used very inappropriate words, in which he called the referee’s decision a “stupid joke”. With a red card for fouling in a situation where the opponent had a chance to score, Van Dijk was only suspended for 1 match. He completed his sentence when he sat out Liverpool’s 3-0 win over Aston Villa.
However, considering the severity of Van Dijk’s overreaction, the FA decided to fine him an additional match and at the same time forced the Dutch midfielder to pay a fine of £100,000.
Van Dijk did not object to this additional sentence: “I just want to make it clear that I completely accept the decision of the authorities. That was my first red card in a Liverpool shirt and I let my feelings go.” Disappointment overwhelmed my reason. I apologized to the referees immediately after the match and took full responsibility.”
Thus, Van Dijk will continue to sit out when the Premier League returns, with Liverpool facing Wolves on September 16.
