Following a penalty incident while playing for the Netherlands, Virgil van Dijk disobeyed his vow to control his temper while interacting with officials.
Van Dijk has recently been under fire for his behavior after being sent off in Liverpool’s 2-1 Premier League win against Newcastle on August 27. After bringing down Alexander Isak as the last man, the Reds’ captain was handed his marching orders.
He did not leave gently, calling the result a “fkin joke” in an expletive-laced outburst directed at referee John Brooks and fourth official Craig Pawson. Van Dijk was later given a two-game suspension and a £100,000 fine for his actions.
In an attempt to put the episode behind him, Van Dijk apologized and offered to learn from it in a grovelling apology. However, after conceding a penalty against Ireland in a Euro 2024 qualifier on Sunday night, his hot head was on display once more in Dublin.
Shane Duffy’s near-post header struck Van Dijk on the hand, earning Ireland a penalty. The referee pointed to the location after hearing the Dutch captain argue his innocence to no avail.
The ensuing penalty was converted by Adam Idah, but Van Dijk was saved by his Liverpool teammate Cody Gakpo, who found the bottom corner from another spot-kick. At halftime, the score was 1-1, but Van Dijk may have got a reprimand from manager Ronald Koeman for his behavior.
He was deemed to have acted “in an improper manner and used abusive and insulting words towards a match official after being sent off” against Newcastle. He then issued a statement saying, “Following the announcement today, I’d just like to make clear that I completely accept the panel’s decision.”
“It was the first red card of my Liverpool career, and I let my frustrations get the best of me in a high-pressure situation.” I apologized to the match officials immediately after the game and accept full responsibility. It’s time to move on. I will continue to assist the club in any manner I can.”
“That was not typical for me, but that was the red card anyway,” he said while on international duty.
“I’ve never had one before at Liverpool, and I think I’ve only had four in my entire career.” Aside from that, I had a good start to the season. I am feeling well and strong. It went nicely against Chelsea and Bournemouth, in my opinion. Despite the red card, the start was satisfactory. I can’t wait to go back.”
Liverpool’s next match is against Wolves on Saturday, September 16, which Van Dijk will be forced to miss.
