Harry Maguire’s luck didn’t improve after putting through his own net against Scotland.
England led 2-0 at halftime in the 150th anniversary match at Hampden Park, with Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham scoring in rapid succession.
The gap was narrowed in the 68th minute, though, when Maguire scored an own goal. The centre-back, who was unable to find a new club during the summer window, came in at half-time to replace Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi.
He paired Brighton’s Lewis Dunk at the heart of England’s defense, but unwittingly assisted Scotland’s comeback.
Andy Robertson found himself on the right side and sent in a cross. Maguire couldn’t completely alter his fight, and the ball spun beyond the hapless Aaron Ramsdale on his attempted left-footed clearing.
Nothing appears to be going right for Maguire at the moment, after being stripped of the leadership at United and making a mistake that led to Ukraine’s equalizer on Saturday.
One fan commented: “I have never seen a player with a greater commitment to banter than Harry Maguire. He will be studied in schools for generations to come.
Another joked: “Steve Clarke’s gamble of throwing Harry Maguire on pays off.”
A third said: “Harry Maguire’s last two goals have been for Sevilla and Scotland.”
A fourth user was a bit more brutal, stating: “An embarrassment for all concerned that Harry Maguire plays for Manchester United Football Club. Shambles.”
A fifth added: “Harry Maguire is like a Main Character American Comedy where everything goes wrong at every opportunity.”
A final person posted: “Harry Maguire is an absolute calamity. A walking disaster. A punchline. So bereft of any talent or natural intuition about how to defend.”
The blunder did not prove costly, though, as England captain Harry Kane restored the two-goal lead with a brilliant finish from a Bellingham pass.
