The Red Devils’ off-field issues were made worse by a humiliating home loss to the undermanned but high-flying Seagulls.
It pours when it rains. Manchester United would have been eager to resume play after a terrible international break off the field, but things only got worse as Erik ten Hag’s team lost 3-1 to Brighton at home.
Rasmus Hojlund had a strong debut for United, but some shoddy United defending allowed Brighton’s former hometown hero Danny Welbeck to take the lead. Hojlund thought he had tied the score, but the goal was disallowed. Later in the second half, more sloppy play by Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof allowed Pascal Gross to increase Brighton’s lead before substitute Joao Pedro added insult to injury for Manchester United.
United had some hope after Hannibal Mejbri scored his first goal for the team, but there was no huge recovery, as they suffered their first home loss in more than a year and their first Premier League loss at Old Trafford since Brighton defeated them 2-1 on the first day of the previous campaign.
Goalkeeper & Defence
Andre Onana (5.4/10):
After his superb performance against Arsenal, his passing was a little off. Joao Pedro’s goal may have been stopped more easily, but fantastic saves were made to keep the score from going worse.
Diogo Dalot (7.6/10):
provided United with a deliberate push down the right flank. made Rashford’s opportunity, which was blocked, a nice one.
Victor Lindelof (6.8/10):
made a weak attempt to stop the opening goal. recovered with several crucial blocks, but the second goal’s bad communication with Martinez was followed by further poor communication.
Lisandro Martinez (7.1/10):
One of his poorest outings while wearing a United jersey. lacked his normal defensive dominance and lost his balance to allow Gross to score the second goal.
Sergio Reguilon (7.6/10):
provided some forward momentum but, more importantly, was not present when Brighton scored their first goal, the move coming from his left wing.
Midfield
Christian Eriksen (5.7/10):
sluggish and sloppy. A corner that failed to beat the first man epitomized his performance.
Casemiro (5.5/10):
Quite poor. Early on, he made a few solid passes and blocks, but after that, his passing became sluggish, and he found it difficult to keep up with the tempo. In the 64th minute, replaced.
Scott McTominay (4.7/10):
made his first season start, however, he didn’t do much to earn his selection.
Attack
Bruno Fernandes (5.4/10):
struggled to have his usual impact on the game.
Rasmus Hojlund (4.6/10):
An excellent home debut, combining well with Rashford and holding the ball up. had just a little bit of a lack of focus, missing a Rashford cross and headed a Fernandes pass over the crossbar. I attempted to put the ball in the goal, but it was out.
Marcus Rashford (3.7/10):
By far the greatest player for United, but as the game went on, his frustration level increased. Hit the bar to set up Hojlund’s goal that was disallowed.
