Mason Greenwood had a dream debut with the new club Getafe.
Mason Greenwood was sent onto the field by Getafe in the 77th minute of the match against Osasuna in round 5 of La Liga. This is not only Greenwood’s debut match for Getafe and the La Liga arena, but also the first official match the 21-year-old striker will attend since January 2022.
In the end, Getafe won a breathtaking 3-2 victory, and Greenwood also played with great effort even though he did not score.
In more than 20 minutes on the field (including overtime), the 21-year-old striker touched the ball 12 times, launched 1 shot, and 4 passes with a 100% success rate. More worth mentioning, he also brought Getafe a corner kick that led to the winning goal in the 86th minute (Maksimovic scored).
On the day Greenwood debuted, Getafe’s Estadio Coliseum Alfonso Pérez stadium with a capacity of 16,500 people was only half filled. As noted by journalist Guillermo Rai (The Athletic), despite being enthusiastically cheered by Getafe fans, the English striker was fiercely booed by Osasuna fans every time he touched the ball.
Previously, Getafe faced a negative reaction from Spanish public opinion because of their decision to recruit Greenwood, who was caught up in a scandal of assaulting his ex-girlfriend.
Getafe recruited Greenwood at the end of the 2023 summer transfer window from MU on a 1-year loan contract. The La Liga representative does not have to pay a loan fee for the 21-year-old striker, and even most of Greenwood’s salary of 75,000 pounds/week will be paid by MU.
Immediately after that, the 21-year-old striker created an unprecedented “fever” at Getafe. His debut event attracted more than 5,000 fans to attend. Not only that, according to many sources from Spain, Greenwood’s number 12 jersey also became the best-selling jersey in Getafe history in the first 48 hours from the time it went on sale.
Journalist Guillermo Rai revealed that the Getafe coaching staff highly appreciated Greenwood even though he had not played for nearly 2 years, even believing that the English striker “could be the best player the club has ever owned in history”.
On the other hand, the La Liga team hopes that the Greenwood deal can help the club build a good relationship with MU while expanding its reputation internationally.
