‘VVD long-term replacement’: Liverpool aim to strengthen defense with €55M move in January

Liverpool are interested in signing highly rated Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie in the January transfer window.

According to Fichajes, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp has made buying a new center-back a major priority, with 21-year-old Hincapie as his prime target.

Last season, the Ecuador international was a regular starter for Leverkusen, but he has yet to appear this season. His successful 2022/23 season, on the other hand, has put him on the radar of prominent European clubs.

Virgil van Dijk, 32, cannot continue to play at the highest level indefinitely. Furthermore, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez have both been injured in recent seasons, and the Reds appear to consider Hincapie as a man who can provide immediate depth to the backline.

This season, Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk has returned to form

The 21-year-old can play as a left-sided center-back, which is a rare commodity in today’s market. He will eventually improve as he plays more matches. It goes without saying that Klopp can bring out the best in the Ecuadorian center-back.

Liverpool is reportedly interested in signing him for €55 million. With that amount, the young South American would be Liverpool’s sixth most expensive signing ever, trailing Van Dijk, Darwin Nunez, and Alisson. It indicates how highly Hincapie is regarded by Premier League clubs.

Hincapie has the potential to be a long-term replacement.

The absence of Ibrahima Konate due to injury has put pressure on Liverpool’s backline recently. Trent Alexander-Arnold’s absence also removes Joe Gomez from the center-back situation.

Hincapie, a 21-year-old who has already played in a big European league like the Bundesliga, may contribute right away while maturing into a cornerstone. His physical tools combined with his technical skills make him an intriguing fit for Klopp’s style.
