Former midfielder Jamie Carragher believes that Arsenal will never win the Premier League with only Aaron Ramsdale in goal. He also supported the permanent purchase of goalkeeper David Raya from Brentford.
Raya joined Arsenal on loan during the 2023 Summer transfer window. He started the Gunners’ last two matches, a 1-0 win over Everton in the Premier League and a 4-0 win over PSV in the Champions League.
This has led to debates about who is the number one goalkeeper at Arsenal. Both Ramsdale and Raya want to keep this position, as Mikel Arteta’s side fight on many fronts.
During Wednesday’s Champions League commentary on CBS Sports in the US, former goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel asked Carragher if he thought Raya was better than Ramsdale.
The former Liverpool defender replied: “Sure. Arsenal will never win with Ramsdale in goal, no chance. Ramsdale can’t even get into the England team.”
Raya’s contract is currently only on loan, but the Gunners could sign the Spanish goalkeeper permanently for £27m at the end of the season.
Earlier in the conversation, Schmeichel expressed confusion over Arsenal’s move to recruit Raya, when Ramsdale was already a solid choice in goal.
“I don’t understand why Arsenal wants to create a competitive situation for goalkeepers,” Schmeichel said. I think Arteta may be creating an unnecessary problem.”
