Erik ten Hag, manager of Manchester United, has acknowledged that the club has considered the possibility of putting Mason Mount on the right wing.
Over the summer, the England international joined the club from Chelsea for a fee of £55 million. He only appeared in two Premier League games before suffering a hamstring injury.
Mount is poised to make his return against Burnley tonight. The 24-year-old has been taking part in squad training this week and might make his debut at Turf Moor.
Prior to the game, Ten Hag was asked about the possibility of playing Mount from the right wing, given the club’s current shortage of options in that position.
“This has been discussed before,” he told reporters on Friday, “but we have options on the right to fill this in, and we will see how we fill it in.”
“As I mentioned, we have options, but they must be available, and then, yeah, you have to get the routines in.” But the ideas and norms are quite obvious.”
Mount could start on the right wing against Burnley
The Blues graduate was United’s first big signing of the summer, but he has yet to make an impact after suffering an early season injury.
He’ll be eager to make apologies after his return. Given his lack of expertise at the position, Ten Hag may choose to start him on the right flank.
With Jadon Sancho and Antony banned, Facundo Pellistri is the role’s only expert, but he has yet to make his full Premier League debut for United.
Mount has only made eight games from the right wing in his career, but he has been efficient with three goals and three assists.
The £250,000-a-week star might make his debut against Burnley tonight. He might possibly switch places with skipper Bruno Fernandes.
