When Manchester United signed Jonny Evans this summer, there were no expectations that he would play for the club during the regular season.
The 35-year-old Northern Ireland international was only brought in on a short-term contract, with the goal of getting him back into fighting shape so he could continue his long career elsewhere.
But, as John Lennon famously stated, “life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans.” Evans stayed, United experienced an injury crisis at all places in the back line, and opportunity presented itself.
Jonny Evans made his first start for the club since 2015 tonight, and it was his 200th appearance in a United shirt.
He made the most of it, setting up Bruno Fernandes for the game’s lone goal as Burnley were defeated 1-0.
“I enjoyed every minute of it,” he stated after the game.
“You get a feeling before the game, I couldn’t wait, it was just pure excitement.” I was buzzing as we approached on the bus. That was my 200th game for Manchester United; I never believed I’d reach that milestone; it was the happiest night of my life.
“At a certain age, you begin to wind down your career.” I got the call [from United] and didn’t have any other options, so I just grabbed it and worked my hardest in training to give myself the greatest chance. Then you just hope your body holds up.
“I never expected to come in and be a starter; I was told that my role would be to provide competition, and that’s how I’ve approached it.” Due to a few injuries, I was given the opportunity to start tonight.
“I think I fit in well tonight and really contributed my experience.”
This was a big result for United, who desperately needed a win in any competition, against any opponent. Their last victory was on August 26, and their last three results were all losses in which they allowed three or more goals.
Jonny Evans joined the club three weeks ago on a one-year agreement. Evans and Manchester United will host Crystal Palace in the third round of the EFL Cup on Tuesday night.
They’ll then welcome the Eagles back four days later for another league game.
