‘We’re in the race’: Klopp admits Liverpool handed a Premier League title omen after brilliant start

Liverpool extended their Premier League unbeaten run with a strong performance against West Ham United – and there was one title-winning omen for Jurgen Klopp’s side to savor.

Goals by Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez, and Diogo Jota grabbed all three points for the Reds, canceling out Jarrod Bowen’s equalizer shortly before halftime.

And, if history is any guide, Sunday’s victory bodes well for the Reds, as they became only the second Liverpool team in the last 43 years to score three or more goals in their first three home games. In fact, the last time Liverpool did so was at the start of the 2019/20 season, when victories over Norwich City (4-1), Arsenal (3-1) and Newcastle United (3-1) lay the groundwork for the Reds to win their first league title since 1990.

Four years later, success over the Hammers comes after Liverpool thrashed Bournemouth (3-1) and Aston Villa (3-0) in their opening two games at Anfield this season.

Liverpool are now two points behind Manchester City at the top of the Premier League standings, with victory guaranteeing the Reds have not lost since a 4-1 hammering at the Etihad Stadium in April.

After the win, defender Joe Gomez told BBC Sport: “They’ve got great quality, they’ve got it up front and throughout the team.” Michail Antonio is obviously a major threat, and we knew it would be difficult.

“Obviously, it’s a big result for us, and going to 1-1 was a time when we needed to reset and regroup, and I believe we did.”

“They’ll always have their moments; all we have to do is stay confident and keep playing football.” On the counter, we were aware of their threats.”

Liverpool’s next Premier League match is a lengthy trip to North London to face a resurgent Tottenham Hotspur, who drew 2-2 with rivals Arsenal at the Emirates on Sunday.

However, the Reds will be expected to make numerous changes in midweek when Championship leaders Leicester City visit Anfield in the League Cup.
