Man United are considering changing their stance on loan player Sergio Reguilon after his impressive start to life at Old Trafford.
Defender Sergio Reguilon joined MU from Tottenham Hotspur on a season-long loan on the last day of the transfer window.
Although MU initially bought this player to “cure” the left-back position, he had an impressive start at Old Trafford. Reguilon has started three consecutive matches for the Red Devils and impressed when Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia were injured.
Reguilon started in losses to Brighton, Bayern Munich, and a 1-0 win over Burnley. Coach Erik ten Hag even revealed that he was sick but still asked to play.
His professional performance and attitude received praise from club members. According to Spanish newspaper AS, if he continues to maintain this form, he can be bought outright by MU at the end of the season.
His performance also surprised fans because under Antonio Conte at Tottenham, he often had to sit on the bench. Journalist Fabrizio Romano added that United staff were delighted by Reguilon’s attitude and the way he carried himself on and off the field.
In particular, his attitude and understanding of Ten Hag’s requirements helped him gain trust and solidify his starting position.
Ten Hag initially only saw Reguilon as a short-term replacement while waiting for Shaw and Malacia to return. But even if they recover, Reguilon’s stability is making MU rethink a permanent buyout.
This could be bad news for Malacia – the first contract that Ten Hag brought in as MU coach last summer for 15 million pounds from Feyenoord. He is often a substitute for Shaw, but Reguilon’s presence could seriously threaten Malacia’s playing minutes.
