‘He’s back’: Mason Greenwood contributes brilliant display on Getafe debut

On Wednesday, Mason Greenwood made his Getafe debut while his new team was held to a 2-2 tie by Athletic Bilbao.

In Getafe’s last two games, the Manchester United loanee was utilized as a substitute; nevertheless, manager Jose Bordalas decided that he should start on the wing.

The second-half goal by Gaston Alvarez, which tied the score at one, was assisted by Greenwood.

Some Athletic Bilbao supporters had made fun of the 21-year-old at San Mames.

Greenwood last started for Man United on January 22, 2022, when they defeated West Ham 1-0 at Old Trafford. It was 613 days later that he was included in Getafe’s starting lineup.

Fans of the team located outside of Madrid have welcomed Greenwood to Spain, where he is trying to restart his career after it was previously derailed by his arrest on attempted rаpe and аssаult charges last year. Greenwood appears to be settling well. Eventually, the Crown Prosecution agency dismissed the accusations.

Following the accusations made against him, United conducted a thorough internal investigation. After six months, it was mutually agreed that Greenwood would continue his career outside of Old Trafford.

Greenwood has settled in quickly and was expected to start for the team for the first time after making an impression in the team’s 4-3 loss to Real Sociedad the previous game.

Rival supporters, meanwhile, have welcomed him with hostility to La Liga; many seem displeased with Getafe’s choice to purchаse the player considering the circumstances surrounding his exit from England.

While making his debut for the team, several Osasuna fans yelled “Greenwood Ԁie” at the Man United academy product.

Following an investigation by the Spanish Football Federation, Osasuna manager Jagoba Arrasate denounced the taunts aimed at the player.

On Wednesday, during the game’s early exchanges, Getafe’s first start, elicited similar criticism from Athletic supporters with every move he made.

Greenwood took a time to settle in, and in the sixth minute, left-back Yuri Berchiche gave Getafe the lead.

The Bradford-born striker gradually started to make an impact on the game, directing two attacks around the half-hour mark before setting up Alvarez for the equalizer six minutes into the second half.

Inaki Williams gave the hosts a 2-1 lead, forcing Getafe to figҺt back from behind once more. However, Juanmi Latasa scored seven minutes from time to give Greenwood’s team a point.
