Liverpool defeated Toulouse 5-1 at Anfield on Thursday in the Europa League.
As the Reds raced to a five-point advantage at the top of their group on the edge of qualifying for the knockouts, there were plenty of talking points.
Ryan Gravenberch put in his best Liverpool effort yet, Wataru Endo scored his first goal, and Darwin Nunez scored but then missed a golden chance (which Gravenberch finished off).
One talking point that may not have been as noticeable but is still worth mentioning is how well Joe Gomez performed and how his form and confidence are increasing.
The 26-year-old got the ball back for Liverpool’s first goal, scored by Diogo Jota after only nine minutes.
Gomez also made a strong effort after the interval to stop a Toulouse attack and performed well in terms of assisting full debutant Luke Chambers on his left.
The Liverpool youth ace did, however, leave a gap in behind for the visitors’ equalizer, but overall, he performed admirably.
Gomez’s stats are impressive
On the night, Gomez also had some great stats. According to Whoscored, he had the most touches of the ball of any player on the field with 120.
He also made three shots, two crucial passes, one aerial challenge, five ground duels, five tackles, three interceptions, and one clearing.
Gomez was one of five Liverpool players rated higher than 8 by Whoscored. He received an 8.13 out of ten.
And we all know what would have happened if that late-game long-range effort had gone in. Unfortunately, it was not to be, but there is still time.
The important thing is that Gomez was impressive at the back, and perhaps he’ll put in more performances like this when his confidence returns.
