Liverpool eyeing £35m Serie A ‘monster’ to unleash Trent Alexander-Anorld to midfield position

Liverpool are ready to spend in 2024, with Jurgen Klopp’s side revived this season following a successful midfield overhaul, albeit there is still room for improvement.

The Premier League club is fighting on all fronts this season and will want to sustain their form in order to compete for the league title, yet changes must be done to guarantee that the squad is fit for purpose in the coming years.

Liverpool are interested in signing Inter Milan right-back Denzel Dumfries, according to Italian newspaper Calciomercato, with the Serie A club demanding a sum of €40 million (£35 million) to allow him to leave.

The story does emphasize the fact that Trent Alexander-Arnold has yet to sign a new contract on Merseyside, which is currently contracted until 2025, though an agreement will almost certainly be reached within the next year.

The 27-year-old Dumfries is also wanted by Chelsea and Manchester United, and while Liverpool may not prioritize the right-back position, it is depleted and the Inter star would be an excellent acquisition.

Denzel Dumfries’ playing style

The £54k-per-week star has been a threatening presence for Inter in recent years, scoring nine goals and providing 18 assists in 108 games across all competitions, winning two Coppa Italia and two Supercoppa Italiana.

He has received praise for his international exploits with the Netherlands, plundering two goals and an assist at the most recent European Championship before a destructive performance against the USA at the 2022 World Cup, posting a goal and two assists to propel his country to the quarter-finals.

Football Transfers compares Dumfries to Bayern Munich full-back Alphonso Davies, and this is the type of player that Klopp may deploy in Liverpool’s lineup.

According to FBref, the Dutchman ranks among the top 14% of full-backs in Europe’s top five leagues for assists and the top 1% for touches in the attacking penalty area per 90 over the past year, highlighting the role that he may play under Klopp’s wing.

In comparison, Davies ranks among the top 5% of positional peers for assists, the top 3% for shot-creating actions, and the top 1% for progressive carries, successful take-ons, and touches in the attacking box per 90, with such metrics corroborating Rio Ferdinand’s previous claims that “he is the best attacking full-back on the planet.”

It’s debatable if the Canadian is the cream of the crop, but his attributes would be a welcome addition to Anfield in the form of Dumfries’, who can do similarly catastrophic damage.

Dumfries, dubbed a “monster” by journalist Alan Rzepa, would be an ideal replacement for Alexander-Arnold on the Anfield flank, providing a different, more direct attacking ability that could be used in rotation or when the England international finds a home in the center of the park.

The clash of styles would be spectacular, and considering the Inter man’s zeal in his profession, Klopp must seriously examine the advantages of sealing his signature and making his move.
