Liverpool returned to winning ways on Sunday afternoon, cruising past Brentford at Anfield in the Premier League. The Reds have struggled recently, having been held to a stalemate by Luton Town last weekend and defeated by Toulouse in midweek.
Jurgen Klopp would have expected a response from his team, and he got it with a 3-0 victory over Brentford. In the 39th minute, Mohamed Salah latched onto Darwin Nunez’s feed and curled the ball into the back of the net.
Just after the hour mark, the Egyptian forward headed home a Kostas Tsimikas cross for his second goal of the game. Diogo Jota managed to get on the scoresheet shortly after as his powerful shot from just beyond the box fizzed past Mark Flekken and into the back of the net. There were no more goals scored as Liverpool secured all three points.
Joel Matip’s reaction to a severe yellow card has gone viral.
Several judgments went against Liverpool in the first half. Darwin Nunez found the back of the net twice in the first half hour, but both goals were called out for offside.
Joel Matip was likewise the victim of a contentious ruling. The Cameroonian defender, who was named to the starting lineup for the second consecutive game, received a hefty booking shortly before Salah’s opener. Brentford were attempting to grab Liverpool on the break, but Christian Nrgaard was stopped by Matip.
While it appeared like Matip had the ball, referee Paul Tierney disagreed and issued the 32-year-old a yellow card. Matip isn’t hesitant to express himself, and he completely lost it when Tierney handed him a warning. His reaction has gone viral on X (previously Twitter), which you can see below…
Matip clearly disagreed with Tierney’s choice, and he may have a point. Matip was able to calm down after his caution and was outstanding as he assisted his team to their fourth clean sheet of the season.
