Alex and Steven Gerrard invited OK! to their beautiful property in Portugal to celebrate their one wedding anniversary in 2008.
The couple lounged on loungers in the sun, played around in their private swimming pool with daughters Lilly-Ella, four, and Lexie, two, and posed for photos in their fuchsia pink-furnished living room.
Liverpool midfielder Steven was playing for England at the time and told OK! The vacation to the hideaway, located near Faro in the Algarve region, provided him with a much-needed break from his hectic training routine.
“As soon as I knew how much time I was going to have off, Alex and I sat down and planned what we were going to do,” Steven, who is now 40 years old, stated. He noted that it had been exactly a year since he married Alex at the Cliveden House luxury hotel on the border of Berkshire and Buckinghamshire, the same place where the Duchess of Sussex slept the night before her wedding to Prince Harry.
Footballers Peter Crouch, Rio Ferdinand, Jamie Redknapp, Ashley Cole, and Ashley’s then-wife, Cheryl Cole were among the celebrities who attended Alex and Steven’s wedding. “We can’t believe the anniversary has already come around,” Steven said, admitting that he had planned something special to do with Alex to commemorate the occasion.
Model Alex reflected on the 2007 event, saying she wishes she could do it all over again because she was so “nervous” on the day. Steven also acknowledged to feeling “anxious” in the lead-up to the wedding, but described the big day as “perfect.”
When asked about their wedding video, Alex, now 38, stated that Lilly “absolutely loves it” and that “she watches it from beginning to end.” Steven told me, “She went through a phase when she watched it every night.”
During the conversation, Steven, who took over as England captain in 2010, commented about how wonderful it was to spend quality time with his girls. “It’s nice to see how delighted they get when I’m around. Lilly, in particular, is four years old and understands when I’m leaving. It’s possible that I’ll be in and out of the house every couple of days, staying in motels and attending away games.”
He went on to say that both of the daughters were “daddy’s girls” and that Alex doesn’t get much attention when he’s at home. “Lilly doesn’t want me to go sometimes, and it’s difficult for me to know that I’m leaving her again,” Steven continued. But it’s what I do, so it has to happen.”
During football season, he can be gone for three weeks out of the month, which he describes as a “completely different way of living.” However, he stated that during the summer months, he can relax with the females and that “football is completely out of my mind.” “Until the first day back at training, it’s all about spending time with family.”
