Liverpool have gained the lead in signing Fluminense midfielder Andre Trindade during the January transfer window, according to Sport (via SportWitness).
The Merseyside giants were interested in signing the Brazilian star during the summer, but they were unable to persuade Fluminense to allow him to leave. The South American club was in the knockout stages of the Copa Libertadores and did not want to lose a crucial first-team member.
Fluminense went on to win the Copa Sudamericana against Boca Juniors, and Sport now reports that the midfielder is set to leave this winter. Liverpool has assumed the lead in trying to sign him, but no decision has been made. Fluminense are yet to receive a new contract offer for him.
Player of the highest caliber
Andre has progressed to become one of the best holding midfielders in Brazil’s top division. He has already won two caps for his country this year, and he may play again in the forthcoming World Cup qualifiers. Liverpool were unable to get him last summer but may try again in the new year.
Jurgen Klopp’s side signed Alexis MacAllister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo, and Ryan Gravenberch last summer, but they still lack a top-tier no.6. Thiago Alcantara is a current squad option, but the Spaniard has not played a single minute since needing hip surgery in May of this year.
The former Bayern Munich player has been ruled out until 2024, and there is no certainty that he will return to the first squad in January. This could persuade the Reds to re-sign Andre, a great ball-playing midfielder who also excels at winning tackles and duels. His work rate is another one of his strong points. Andre, who is also being pursued by Manchester United, might cost Liverpool approximately £35 million. They consider him as Casemiro’s heir apparent.
